If you try to install Gnome on your Windows computer running the Linux emulator Cygwin from the Cygwin command line, you will not be able to run the Gnome desktop. Cygwin installs the Linux command-line tools, but not the necessary components to run Gnome or other graphical interfaces. Instead, before you can start Gnome, you need to install an X-server and a specially compiled Gnome build. Once you do, the Gnome graphical interface desktop will start automatically when Cygwin starts.
1.
Run Cygwin's setup.exe file. Click the 'X11' category, and select 'xinit' to install Cygwin's X-server.
3.
Click 'Download From the Internet.'
4.
Enter 'cygnome.sourceforge.net/install' as the site to download from, and click 'Next.'
5.
Click the Gnome packages that you want to install, and click 'Next' again. Gnome installs.
